Vision & Values

About the Department of Art & Art History

The Department of Art & Art History fosters innovative and thoughtful artistic practice, scholarship and education. As professional artists, designers, art historians and art educators, our faculty enrich the experience of visual culture for our students and for the metropolitan area of Charlotte. We contribute to local, national and international dialogue through exhibitions, lectures, publications and other forms of research and outreach. By promoting critical thinking, we empower our students with the analytical and adaptive skills necessary to negotiate and contribute to an increasingly complex and cosmopolitan visual world. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design.

The department also offers a Minor in Art History. All studio art and art education classes are available to art majors only. Many art history classes are open to any major.

Our Research

What our students are saying about their experience

Camila Surinach

B.F.A. in Graphic Design

“I love how often student work is showcased, whether in exhibitions or even in the Macy hallway displays. There are also so many on-campus job opportunities where students can build real-world experience. It truly feels like UNC Charlotte values our voices and talents.”

Flor Rodriguez

B.F.A. in Art with a concentration in Art Education

“My favorite part of the art & art history department has to be the diversity and sense of community within my classes. I truly love my professors—the environment we’ve been able to create and foster here has been nothing but kind, motivating and incredibly influential for my creative journey. It’s especially inspiring to see that my professors are not only dedicated in the classroom, but also continue their own creative practices outside of it. As a future art educator, that level of passion and commitment is something I deeply admire and hope to carry forward in my own career.”
