Through conferences, curated field trips, guest artist residencies and production and performance opportunities, our special opportunities open doors to transformative experiences on and off campus. Whether you’re traveling to see world-class productions, connecting with renowned professionals or performing for crowds, these programs are designed to broaden your perspective and deepen your creative practice.

The Department of Theatre regularly invites esteemed actors for masterclasses for our students and give special insights into the world of professional theatre.

Field Trips and Conferences

Disney Heroes and Villains Costume Exhibition

Friday, October 3, 2025
A day trip to Columbia, South Carolina, for students and faculty to see Disney’s Heroes and Villains Costume Exhibit.


American Shakespeare Center

Friday, November 1, and Saturday, November 2, 2025
An overnight trip to Staunton, Virginia, for students and faculty to see three shows (two Shakespeare and a musical), enjoy a tour of the American Shakespeare Center facilities, and spend time discussing the productions.


American College Theatre Festival (ACTF)

Student actors, designers, directors and dramaturgs showcase and compete at the ACTF Region IV event. Students also participate in a wide array of workshops, lectures, and performances.


Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC)

Select theatre majors attend the annual Southeastern Theatre Conference in order to participate in a wide array of workshops, lectures, performances and informational sessions on graduate programs in theatre.


Shakespeare Theatre Company

A student trip to Washington, D.C. to The Shakespeare Theatre Company/Theatre for a New Audience and to visit museums and historical sites. The Department of Theatre will cover students’ train travel, hotel and theatre tickets. Space is limited.


Theatre Passport Free Ticket Series

The PASSPORT Free Ticket Series offers UNC Charlotte Theatre majors the opportunity to attend a variety of professional theatre productions in Charlotte. Each semester we purchase tickets to wide variety of performances including plays, musicals, opera, children’s theater, and interdisciplinary/devised work. Participating students are encouraged to share their opinions about the shows with faculty and student colleagues.

Special Performance Opportunities

UNC Charlotte Commedia Players

Under the artistic leadership of Professor of Physical Theatre Carlos Cruz, Theatre majors have the opportunity to audition for this special performance troupe appearing each fall at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Over the course of eight weekends, our student commedia troupe performs for thousands of visitors to the festival.
