How did you first get interested in architecture?
Growing up I wasn’t fully aware of architecture’s larger relation to design and culture. I had watched my general contractor father stress over blueprints at the kitchen table and visiting his construction sites and knew that was ultimately what interested me. It wasn’t until my undergrad at UNC Charlotte when I really understood that architecture was more than just construction. It wasn’t just materials and physics; it was the physical manifestation of society’s beliefs and culture. It was art and function.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
Through my studies at UNC Charlotte, I have developed a strong passion for historic preservation and the role architecture plays in connecting the past to the present. It’s the opportunity to give historic buildings and spaces new life while preserving the cultural lineage, stories, and identities that make them meaningful to their communities. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career that gives me the opportunity to advocate for and contribute to the preservation of architectural history, particularly the buildings and places that have played a fundamental role in shaping our communities and society.
What is your favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture and your department?
I love the community that we’ve made within the College of Arts and Architecture! There is so much we can learn from each discipline and the College of Arts and Architecture provides the opportunities to engage in those communications. Community is such an important part of the School of Architecture especially, and it really feels like we’ve created a second family within our studios.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts/design community?
I’ve had the privilege to work as teaching assistant for multiple School of Architecture programs, such as the Summer Design Academy, the Kickstart: Architecture Tutorial Program, and various other architecture classes. Outside of my educator role, I’m currently serving as Co-President of “Women in Architecture Students” (WIAS) which is a student organization aimed at community building and supporting architecture students within their professional and educational roles. In addition to being Co-President, I’m a founding member of an obscure film club.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
I’m am a huge sports fan, so when I’m not designing or researching I am probably watching some kind of sporting event (usually hockey).
