Delany Holcomb

Categories:

Business Services Coordinator for the Department of Art & Art History at UNC Charlotte

Education: B.A. in Art, UNC Charlotte (2017)

Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC

Delany (Lany) Holcomb has been an artist since she was a little kid and shares “my parents supported my art from the get-go!” Now, Lany is a business service coordinator for the Department of Art & Art History at UNC Charlotte and has been working on campus since 2022. Before that she completed a post-baccalaureate semester in Spring of 2019.

In addition to her “day job” at her alma mater, Lany continues her creative practice at home. “Lately my muse has been my niece. I love using her as the subject of some of my at-home printing projects! I also designed my brother’s box lacrosse league jerseys. Keeping my art close to home makes it feel much more special and personal to me.”

You might think there is little connection between Lany’s art degree and her current work with spreadsheets and numbers, but Lany says the lessons of an art degree actually prepared her well for this position.

“While I have a more logic/strategy-focused brain, there is a huge overlap between creativity and the way our brains work while making art, and the processes that go into certain mediums. My background gave me a great foundation for abstract problem-solving and process, and it has definitely helped me connect more with the financial needs of the Department of Art & Art History.”

During her time at UNC Charlotte, Lany loved going to gallery openings in the Art & Art History department and field trips to museums in Charlotte. She encourages students to cherish their time being a part of the College of Arts + Architecture.

“Enjoy the process of your education – don’t be eager to rush through to graduation! I miss the moments that I took slowly the most, because it made me feel more connected to the work I was doing and the growth I was seeing as a part of my education.”
