Malena Valencia is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art & Art History at UNC Charlotte. Prior to UNCC she taught at colleges in NC, SC, TX, and FL.  She earned an MFA in painting/drawing at the University of Florida and completed an immersion language program at the Russian School of Norwich University in Vermont, the oldest private military college in the US.  Her teaching repertoire in the visual arts has covered all levels of painting, drawing, mixed media, 2D design, 3D design, conceptual art, installation/performance art, art history, art appreciation, liberal studies, and honors-level humanities.  She also taught English Language Acquisition to new adult refugees and immigrants in the Florida Keys, collaborated in teaching visual art to male inmates at a jail in NC, and taught visual arts at the K-8 level in the Florida Keys and NC.   She has exhibited her artwork in spaces across the US and in Canada, and has been the recipient of a number of public and private visual arts, education, and humanities grants, including the NC Arts Council, NC Humanities Council, and Gallucci Creative Fund.
