Local Galleries Feature UNC Charlotte Art Faculty
Three Charlotte galleries are featuring works by UNC Charlotte art faculty this fall. Thomas Schmidt, assistant professor of interdisciplinary 3D art, is showing work at Hodges Taylor Gallery; Andrew Leventis, assistant professor of painting, is featured at Sozo Gallery; and retired professor Susan Brenner is in exhibition at Elder Gallery.
The Hodges Taylor exhibition, MAKE/SHIFT, presents work by Schmidt and Penland-based artist Rachel Meginnis through November 30. Schmidt’s new body of work continues to explore the intersections of digital and traditional “by hand” fabrication, creating beautiful forms with ceramics and materials such as wood, paper, and plant life.
Leventis’s new series, Mise-en-Scene, is on view at Sozo Gallery through the end of October. Leventis observes disregarded moments in film, pauses the scene, records the frozen image with his camera, and then uses the resultant photographs to create his extraordinary oil paintings.
Brenner’s paintings at Elder Gallery represent work from 1999-2007 and are presented with paintings by Chase Langford in the exhibition, Evolution, through October 27.
