Department of Music Study Abroad in Germany

The Department of Music offers a summer, faculty-led study abroad program in Frankfurt, Germany led by Assistant Professor of Voice Susan Gouthro.

Germany: Frankfurt Opera and Song Summer Institute

Immerse yourself in the heart of European opera with this 10-day study abroad opera and song workshop in Frankfurt, Germany. Designed for American university voice majors aspiring to professional opera careers, the program offers daily singing lessons, acting classes, and intensive rehearsals focussed on German-language opera scenes. Participants will collaborate with international coaches and faculty, culminating in a final public performance in a professional setting.

Led by Assistant Professor of Voice Susan Gouthro, students will also attend world-class live opera performances at renowned German venues, gaining insight into the country’s rich operatic tradition. Beyond the stage, cultural excursions and guided tours will offer a deeper appreciation of Frankfurt’s vibrant history. The program fosters artistic growth, intercultural understanding, and global musical awareness in one of Europe’s cultural capitals. Program Details

All students participating in the program will receive 1 credit for MUPF 1124: Opera Workshop. In addition, lower level students will receive 1 credit for MUPF 1253: Applied Music: Voice and upper level students will receive 2 credits for MUPF 3253: Advanced Applied Music: Voice.
