Fall 2026 Exhibitions

promo slide for The Distance of the Moon, with details of work by Soo Kim

The Distance of the Moon

On view Aug. 10 – Oct. 7,
Reception: Sept. 15, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Artist and educator Soo Kim often employs techniques of cutting and layering in order to introduce areas of absence or disruption in what we tend to take for granted – the interpretation of photographic images. Kim believes her lengthy creative process infuses her artworks with a “slowness” that finds its counterpart in the amount of time it takes the viewer to comprehend them. In this most recent body of work, Kim focuses on Jantar Mantar, a collection of 18th-century monumental observatories in northern India. Constructed by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur, these five sites were originally functional structures for measuring and recording astrological movements. Although no longer in use, the four surviving sites remain standing as testaments to mankind’s timeless fascination with the cosmos. During a visit to Jantar Mantar in 2025, Kim photographed each site’s elegant forms in order to re-create their appearances using her signature hand-cut collaging techniques. The Distance of the Moon will be Kim’s first exhibition of these framed works and large-scale murals inspired by Jantar Mantar.

Born in South Korea, Soo Kim moved to Los Angeles in 1980. After earning a BA degree from the University of California, Riverside, she combined studies in critical writing, art and film at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia for her MFA. She is currently the Professor and Program Director of Photography, and heads the Critic-in-Residence program at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
