UNC Charlotte’s Department of Dance does not require an audition for acceptance. The first week of classes is used for placement evaluations where students will be assessed and placed in the appropriate movement practice courses. Further assessment of dance majors’ proficiencies occurs at various times each semester through in-class work, individual conferences, and course exams.
Proficiency assessments are based on criteria established for each dance form. To assist students’ understanding of their development, dance faculty provide progression feedback along with a recommendation for the next semester’s course registration. At the midpoint of their degree, dance majors meet with dance faculty for a formal review. The Mid-Degree Assessment is designed to provide feedback on students’ progress by recognizing strengths, identifying areas for growth, and recommending areas of focus for successful completion of graduation requirements.
Admission to the Professional Training Certificate in Dance with Charlotte Ballet does require an audition. To schedule an audition, contact Delia Neil, Certificate Coordinator. If you audition for the certificate program in a city other than Charlotte, you may consider this your UNC Charlotte Department of Dance placement audition. Be sure to notify the Department of Dance that you’ve auditioned with Charlotte Ballet.
