Tell us a little about yourself! How did you first get interested in design?
I didn’t always know that graphic design was my calling. In fact, I began my college journey studying filmmaking at UNC School of The Arts, where I quickly realized that the film industry was not for me. I began to look for an alternative path where I could apply myself in the arts and started touring colleges again. Once I toured UNC Charlotte and visited the College of Arts + Architecture, the graphic design program captured my interest as another avenue for artistic story telling. I began the program with little knowledge of design and Adobe Suite, but through hard work and many sleepless nights, I discovered my passion for it. Now I truly couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
My love for graphic design spans many facets. I love working on package design and motion graphics, but I would be happy to have a career in any graphic design field where I am challenged and have the opportunity to grow my skills further.
What is your favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture?
My favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture is the amazing opportunities it has presented to me. I have had the chance to work with and learn from some of the most incredible design professors including, but not limited to, David Brodeur, Cynthia Frank, and Robert Campbell. I have also been granted the invaluable opportunity to intern with the College of Arts + Architecture, where I have worked under Meg Whalen and Sam Salvato.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts/design community?
During my time at UNC Charlotte, I have consistently been an active member of the Charlotte arts community. I worked on campus at Nova Literary-Arts Magazine for the first two years of the program. I then took a graphic design internship with Kimley-Horn, an engineering consulting company. During my third year in the design program, I took part in the university’s first year of competing in the American Advertising Federation’s Student Competition. I also interned at the College of Arts + Architecture during that time, which I will continue to do until I graduate in December.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
As someone in a creative field, it is often difficult to find the time and energy to create art for fun. However, about a year ago, I discovered my love for knitting and have knit a little bit every day since. I also love to sing and write songs, play Minecraft with my friends, and I have recently taken on sewing as well. I love to be creative and express myself through arts and crafts.
