Opening Reception: Susan Brenner, The State of Things

January 22, 2018 - 5:00 PM to January 23, 2018 - 4:59 PM
Rowe Galleries

The Department of Art & Art History and Rowe Galleries present paintings by retired professor Susan Brenner in The State of Things. The exhibition runs January 17-February 7, with a reception on Monday, January 22, 5-7 pm. Brenner will speak at 5:30 pm.

Susan Brenner is a painter who also uses photography, digital imaging, drawing, and installation to create her work. For over 20 years her work was concerned with issues related to the body — in its biological, psycho-social, and political manifestations. In more recent years she has shifted focus to the global forces that surround and affect bodies. While her recent work takes the form of abstraction that invites interpretation, her earlier work was more narrative or literary in nature.

She exhibits nationally, is a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner grant, and has also received a Southern Arts Federation/NEA Regional Fellowship Award in Painting and Works on Paper, two North Carolina Artist’s Fellowships, and a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Arts & Science Council. Recently, she completed public art for the LYNX Blue Line Extension. That work, inspired by the branches of Charlotte's tree canopy, will appear as the glass panel walls of the elevator towers at the University City Boulevard and JW Clay light rail stations.
