Atkins Out Loud: A Time to Shout!

dancers in ring shout performance
December 13, 2023 - 12:00 PM
Halton Reading Room, Atkins Library

J. Murrey Atkins Library hosts an "Atkins Out Loud" program featuring students from the departments of dance and music in a performance of African American Ring Shout, a movement and music tradition historically rooted in Africa and created by enslaved people in the Carolinas and Georgia. Still practiced today, Ring Shout is the oldest African American performance tradition. An expression of religious fervor, cultural solidarity, and social resistance, its legacy includes a vast repertoire of Black American music and dance.

Read more about the program, which was performed in November at Historic Rosedale, in this article.

This event is FREE.
