Anne R. Belk Theater

Department of Dance faculty Audrey Baran, E.E. Balcos, Kaustavi Sarkar, and Ashley Tate present a compelling program of diverse pieces.

Soma Terra, performed by E.E. Balcos with guest artists Tal Halevi and Margery Segal, is based on the performers’ internal and external environments and the relationships that manifest. The movement expression is embodied through the somatic movement practice of Body-Mind Centering.

Audrey Baran performs Tales of War and of Waste with dancers Sharon Dunson and Ali Roth and also presents a duet entitled An Offering performed by Rahquelah Conyers and Kate Micham.

Rati Vilaap: Exploring Stages of Grieving performed by Kaus Sarkar uses mythological sketches, stages, and modes of grief explored in four acts. "Act I: Sambhrama" borders on delirium, "Act II: Smarana" rests on remembrance, "Act III: Tandava" ushers in total destruction, and "Act IV: Vilaap" describes the state of acceptance with mourning. The story is borrowed from the iconic ancient poet Kalidasa where the protagonist Rati mourns the loss of her beloved.

From Brooklyn to Browne’s Ferry, choreographed by Ashley L. Tate and performed with Montë Murphy and Julia Peterson is an excerpt of a larger multimedia and multidiscplinary work that tells the story of the Browne’s Ferry neighborhood. Like many University-area neighborhoods, it was developed in the 1990s as a racially and ethnically diverse middle-class neighborhood. In addition, it is home to the transplanted Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, whose congregation moved from their historic church in the Brooklyn/Second Ward neighborhood in 2006. This project is part of the College's New South | Global South initiative.

Tickets are $8-$18 for the general public. CoA+A Faculty, Staff, and Students are eligible for free tickets to this performance.  Please log into your Niner account in the ticketing system to redeem.
