2021 Faculty Dance Concert
September 10, 2021 - 7:30 PM
September 11, 2021 - 7:30 PM
Anne R. Belk Theatre - Robinson Hall

Faculty from the Department of Dance present a compelling program of contemporary and Odissi dance featuring choreography by Audrey Baran, Ananya Chatterjea, and Bill Evans.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Audrey Baran will present two works, performed by her compant, Baran Dance. The group work Smoke, Glass & Other Debris imagines a utopian future where patriarchy has been burned to the ground and captures a snapshot of what is left after the smoke clears. The trio Vacancy , pictured above, questions how we navigate or occupy the empty space and time left behind after a loss, and asks: Should we?

Associate Professor of Dance E.E. Balcos will perform a solo titled Tales from the Wizard, choreographed especially for Balcos by Bill Evans. "This suite of 10 short dances to Hermit Songs by Samuel Barber depicts aspects of a man who might possess magical powers," writes Evans. "The costume he wears in different ways becomes his partner in enacting the kinds of mystical rites we hear of in legends and fairy tales."

Assistant Professor Kaustavi Sarkar will perform a dance solo, Dharalo: Sharpening at the Edge of Pain, by Ananya Chatterjea, and present a dance film titled Sukasarika: Mirrored Lives that features choreography by Maya Kulkarni.
