Play Directed by Theatre Professor Named to Best of Chicago Theatre List by Chicago Tribune
The Chicago Tribune named Lela & Co., a play directed by theatre professor Robin Witt, as the #2 best Chicago theatre production of 2017. The theatre critic, Chris Jones, chose the top ten productions from more than 200 that he reviewed this past year.
Lela & Co. was presented by Chicago’s Steep Theatre July 13 – September 16. It was the U.S. premiere of the play, by British playwright Cordelia Lynn.
“Robin Witt’s direction was unstinting and the central performance, from the relative newcomer Cruz Gonzalez-Cadel, was the rare tour de force that did full justice to the term,” wrote Jones.
Witt works regularly in Chicago theatre and has directed numerous productions at the Steep Theatre, as well as the Griffin Theatre Company, the Goodman, A Red Orchid Theatre, and Steppenwolf. In 2015 and 2016 she won Joseph Jefferson (Jeff) Awards, honoring non-Equity Chicago theatre, in the category of “Best Director (Play).”
