Music Students Join Charlotte Symphony and ASOTT to Celebrate MLK
Students from the Department of Music will join the Charlotte Symphony and A Sign of the Times jazz ensemble to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King in the 10th annual “Bridging Musical Worlds” program this Sunday, January 14, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Conference Center. The concert begins at 5 pm and is preceded by a community meal at 3:30 pm.
The program brings together music and musicians of the European classical tradition and the American jazz tradition. The department’s student string quartet – Jane Parris and Ruby Byrd, violins; Yovany Romero Gomez, viola; and Andrew Llamas, cello – will perform a movement of Franz Schubert’s “Rosamunde” quartet, then will join the Charlotte Symphony for music by Beethoven, Dvorak, and Florence Price. A Sign of the Times will play a jazz set, then all the musicians, including the UNC Charlotte students, will join together for two finale pieces – arrangements of Barry White’s “Love’s Theme” and Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy, Me/What’s Going On” medley.
Tickets are $5 at the door.
