Music Alumni Launch Particular Ensemble

Wednesday, January 4, 2017

Music alumni Matthew Primm and Meredith Butterworth are launching a new initiative, the Particular Ensemble, to give music performance opportunities for up-and-coming composers. The project aims to promote new music and diversity within the music field, and each concert will present works by contemporary composers of diverse backgrounds, including race and gender.

The first Particular Ensemble concert will be on Saturday, January 14, at 7:00 pm at Avondale Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The concert features pieces by six composers: Dan Barton, Meredith Butterworth, Josue CF, Will Huebler, Jessica Rugani, and Matthew Primm. Among the participating performers are UNC Charlotte faculty Dr. Jessica Lindsey (clarinet) and Dr. Shawn Smith (conductor) and alumna Alice Silva (violin).

Both Butterworth and Primm studied composition at UNC Charlotte with Dr. John Allemeier. Butterworth graduated in fall of 2009 and received her Master of Music in Composition from New York University in 2016. Primm graduated from UNC Charlotte in spring of 2011 and received his Master of Music in Composition from the Hartt School, University of Hartford, in 2015.
