Art History Professor to Present at African Studies Symposium
Dr. Lisa Homann, assistant professor of art history, will present a paper and chair a roundtable discussion at the 17th Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) Triennial Symposium on African Art, to be held August 9-12 at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana.
Dr. Homann has been conducting research in Burkina Faso since 2006. Her paper, “Archive and Field as Sites of Exchange: Creating New Mask Forms in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso,” reflects her ongoing research of visual and performance aesthetics in masquerade. Recently, video footage of ephemeral masquerades that she took in Burkina Faso was added to the North Carolina Museum of Art’s permanent collection of African art, which opens in a new expanded gallery this summer.
Dr. Homann serves on the editorial board of the journal African Arts. At the symposium, she will lead the roundtable discussion, “Contemplating Future Directions in African Art History,” presented in recognition of the journal’s 50th anniversary and the occasion of the first ACASA Triennial Symposium on the African continent.
