Monday, May 23, 2016

Five faculty members of the Department of Art & Art History will be part of the group exhibition, Pacts and Invocations: Magic and Ritual in Contemporary Art, opening June 23 at the Spartanburg Art Museum. Curated by Assistant Professor of Print Media Erik Waterkotte, Pacts and Invocation will feature work by 10 artists, including UNC Charlotte faculty Malena Bergmann, Aspen Hochhalter, Anna Kenar, Janet Williams, and Waterkotte.

Pacts and Invocations: Magic and Ritual in Contemporary Art presents works in a variety of media that explore concepts of "magic" and "ritual" found in traditional western religions, rural superstition, the occult, and popular culture.

An opening reception will be held on June 24; the exhibition runs through August 28. As an extension of the exhibition a catalog is being produced which will include reproductions of the participating artists' works as well as written contributions by Dr. John Reeves from UNC Charlotte’s Religious Studies Department and Dr. Matthew Garite from High Point University.
