Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare Co-Edits New Book
A new book co-edited by Robinson Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare Andrew Hartley, with Peter Holland, surveys Shakespeare’s prevalence across popular culture. Published by Bloomsbury, Shakespeare and Geek Culture includes 18 essays that explore “geeky” enthusiasm for the Bard in science fiction novels, board games, movies, and other popular platforms.
“Working at the intersections of a wide range of fields – including fan studies and film analysis, cultural studies and fantasy/sci-fi theory – the authors demonstrate how the particularities of the connection between Shakespeare and geek culture generate new insights into the plays, poems, and their larger cultural legacy in the 21st century,” the publisher explains.
Hartley’s previous academic books include The Shakespearean Dramaturg (Palgrave 2006), Julius Caesar (Shakespeare in Performance series, Manchester UP 2013), Shakespeare and Political Theatre (Palgrave 2013), Shakespeare on the University Stage (Cambridge UP 2014), Julius Caesar: A Critical Reader (Arden, 2016), and Shakespeare and Millennial Fiction (Cambridge, 2017). He was the editor of the performance journal Shakespeare Bulletin (Johns Hopkins UP) from 2003-2013. He is also the author of 23 works of fiction.
This fall, Hartley is directing the Department of Theatre production of Julius Caesar. Adapted for the present day, The Corona Caesar will be released as a five-part podcast series, beginning November 14. Learn more and reserve free tickets here.
