Dance Students to Perform at North Carolina Museum of Art
Students from the Department of Dance will perform Frida’s Faces at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) in Raleigh on Sunday, January 12. The performances will take place in conjunction with the exhibition Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection, on view at the museum through January 19.
Choreographed by Associate Professor of Dance Delia Neil, Frida’s Faces is a choreographic exploration of Frida Kahlo’s life through her paintings. Kahlo’s multiple personas and her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera emerge from the canvases of nine works: Self-Portrait, 1946; Self-Portrait with Velvet Dress, 1926; The Little Deer or The Wounded Deer, 1946; The Dream (The Bed), 1940; Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940; Memory, the Heart, 1937; Girl with Death Mask (She Plays Alone), 1938; The Two Fridas, 1939; and Diego and I, 1949.
Frida’s Faces was performed on the Fall Dance Concert at UNC Charlotte in November, featuring Rahquelah Conyers, Cameron Corbett, Lydia Heidt, Cara McMahon, and Milcah Williams as Frida Kahlo and Kenneth Raynor as Diego Rivera. The students will perform the work four times on January 12: 10:15 am, 11:15 am, 1:15 pm, and 2:15 pm. For more information, visit the NCMA website.
