UNC Charlotte Appoints New Dean of College of Arts + Architecture
The UNC Charlotte community is pleased to welcome Brook Muller as dean of the College of Arts + Architecture beginning September 2019. Muller joins us from University of Oregon, where he is a professor in the Department of Architecture and director of the University of Oregon Portland Architecture Program.
Muller’s leadership experience includes appointments as acting dean and interim dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (now called College of Design), as well as associate dean for Academic Affairs for the school. He coauthored and directs the interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Ecological Design. In addition, he coauthored concurrent degrees: Master of Business Administration and Master of Architecture; and Master of Community and Regional Planning and Master of Architectural Design.
Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Oregon in 2004, Muller was the director of an environmental sustainability program and an assistant professor at California Polytechnic State University, where he received the Wesley Ward Outstanding Teaching Award in 2002.
Muller entered academia from practice. After earning a Master of Architecture (M. Arch.) from University of Oregon, he worked with Behnisch and Partners Architects in Stuttgart, Germany. Among other professional pursuits, he served as project co-leader on the design of the IBN Dutch Institute for Forestry and Nature Research, a European Union pilot project for sustainable design.
As Provost Joan Lorden said: “UNC Charlotte has sought a creative and collaborative academic leader to advance interdisciplinary engagement and innovation through research, education and outreach. We looked for a vision builder for our College of Arts + Architecture who will support the growth of all the college’s disciplines and extend our community partnerships and service in the Charlotte region. We believe we have found that leader in Brook Muller.”
UNC Charlotte looks forward to Muller’s leadership in shaping and realizing the goals of the College of Arts + Architecture with the college’s faculty, students, and staff to embrace the future, commit to UNC Charlotte’s vision and values, and contribute to the next phase of our burgeoning urban research university.
