Minor in Architectural History & Heritage

The Minor in Architectural History & Heritage offers a foundational understanding of the history and interpretation of architecture as well as the cultural, economic, political, material, geographic, and other factors that have shaped the built environment across time. This Minor focuses on interpretive lenses, research methods, and writing strategies for the historical analysis and criticism of architecture. Program requirements include a combination of broad survey courses, seminars on specialized topics, and a methodologies course, and work conducted in the minor explores how those activities inform and relate to contemporary architectural practice as well as how related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities inform an understanding of the built environment.

The Minor is open to students of any major and requires completion of 18 credit hours of coursework. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses counted toward the Minor. Students may share up to 9 credit hours between their Minor and Major.

The Minor is closely affiliated with a graduate research program, the Master of Science in Architecture – Critical Heritage, meaning that students in the minor are exposed to advanced research. Students who complete the minor have opportunities upon graduating to pursue this type of research, as well as related types of research in other graduate programs.
