Deborah Ferguson

Faculty Research Connections Profile

Deborah Ferguson is a Senior Lecturer of Art Education at UNC Charlotte. She received a BFA with K-12 teaching licensure from UNC Charlotte, a Masters of Art Education degree from Winthrop University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UNC Charlotte. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC Charlotte, she taught 9-12 high school photography and visual arts, K-6 elementary art, and special needs art in both Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union Counties in North Carolina.

She has presented lectures and workshops at both state and national conferences on intergenerational experiences and diverse contemporary artists for use in the K-12 classroom. She has conducted arts research in China and India and her recent research explores the balance between K-12 art educators’ artist-teacher identities and its benefits to students.

As an exhibiting practicing artist, Ferguson works with photography, painting, and fibers to investigate the symbolism and enchantment of memorabilia, the powerful illusion of objects, and its effects on the mind.
