New Gallery of Modern Art Hosts Exhibition of Professor’s Work
A show of new work by Associate Professor of Art Marek Ranis will open at the New Gallery of Modern Art in Charlotte on January 17. The exhibition, Seascapes, presents new paintings and works on paper inspired by recent travel in the Arctic region. In this body of work, Ranis shares his impressions of the polar landscape, driven by his desire to capture the essence of forms, colors and textures of places and phenomena that are vanishing at great speed at this very moment. The show runs through the end of February.
Since 2002, Ranis has created a diverse body of work informed by a global investigation into climate change, conducting research during residencies in Iceland, Greenland, and Alaska. In the summer of 2017, he was one of 15 artists featured in the exhibition of the Arctic Arts Festival in Harstad, Norway.
Most recently, Ranis has been named Curator at Large at the Anchorage Museum, Alaska. Read a profile of him in UNC Charlotte Magazine here.
