How did you first get interested in dance?
I’ve grown up dancing for as long as I can remember. Dance has always been something I’ve felt deeply connected to. From a young age, I knew I wanted to have a career in dance so I could continue teaching, learning, and growing as a dancer. I was so happy that Charlotte could offer me both my degrees that I wanted. I am now pursuing both a degree in Dance and Communications.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
My goal is to one day dance professionally for an NFL or NBA team. Being on the Charlotte Dance Team has made that dream even stronger, and I’ve developed such a love for performing at game days. I also want to continue doing musical theater. I later want to move into teaching or choreography. I want to keep inspiring others through dance and share the same passion that has shaped who I am today.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Dance?
My favorite thing about the department is how many opportunities they give us to grow as performers and artists. I love how close we get to be with our faculty and staff. They truly care about our success and help us improve every day. The sense of community and support here makes it such a special place to learn and create. I’ve had the chance to go on a field study trip to New York City with Professor Tod Kubo, which was an incredible experience that expanded my perspective on professional dance and theatre. I’ve also been able to perform in the Fall Dance Concert, and during my freshman year, I was cast in Legally Blonde: The Musical. Most recently, I found out that I’ll be performing in Cabaret: The Musical this year here at UNC Charlotte, and I couldn’t be more excited for this next opportunity to perform and grow.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I’m currently a member of the UNC Charlotte Dance Team. I serve as Miss Charlotte 2025 in the Miss America scholarship program. I’m the owner of my own 501(c)(3) called Josie‘s blessing in a box which helps fight food insecurity. You can check out my nonprofit at givebacknc.org. I’m a part of the student alumni Society, which is bridging the gap between alumni and students on campus. I’m also in Alpha Delta Pi sorority at UNC Charlotte and I serve as the community service chair.
How has your scholarship helped you?
I’ve been able to gain enough scholarships through the Miss America opportunity and by being Miss Charlotte that have covered my tuition cost for the past three years, I have been here at Charlotte. I’m extremely grateful and blessed that I have the opportunity to get to represent Charlotte and I find that it is important to give back. My favorite quote is “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service to others.” I truly try to live this quote out every day. I’m so very grateful for the community I have built in Charlotte.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
I recently just got an orange cat and her name is Maisie Lou so I love spending any free time I can with her.
