How did you first get interested in dance?
I was always drawn to the performing arts. As a child, I loved watching live theatre and wanted to be on stage with the actors! I also enjoyed watching Dance Moms because I was inspired by the girls performing on stage. I would choreograph dances in the kitchen and pretend I was also dancing on stage. I began dancing at a studio in eighth grade and have not stopped since! I decided to pursue a career in Dance Education because I was so inspired by the dance teachers that helped me get to where I am today. I want to make a positive impact on others as well.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I hope to have a performing, choreographing, and teaching career in dance. Dancing in a contemporary or jazz dance company, or for Disney and cruise ships, would be incredibly fulfilling – although I am not set on a career path. Most importantly, I want my career to be filled with artistic expression through dance and making my fellow dancers and audience members feel something. I hope to have a performing career, then go on to be a choreographer/teacher that sets work and teaches classes for different dance studios.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Dance?
My favorite thing about the UNC Charlotte Dance Department is the faculty! I have experienced dance like I never have before with UNC Charlotte. The faculty is extremely knowledgeable, personable, and they genuinely want you to succeed in every way. Another one of my favorite things about the Dance Department and the College of Arts + Architecture is the supportive community!
How has your scholarship helped you?
I have been awarded the Clara McKay and Charles H. Stone Scholarship in Dance and the Belk Performing Arts Scholarship in Dance. I am grateful for these scholarships because they grant me more personal funds to use towards paying for my apartment and necessities.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
When I am not in class, studying, or working, I love hanging out with my boyfriend Josh! I also enjoy trying new coffee shops and improvising dance movements.
