Ashley Legassie has always been drawn to the creative world, but she did not find her true passion for art and design until high school. She took a multimedia design class that was an introduction to design programs, which is where she fell in love with combining art and creativity with technology. Over time, that interest grew into a love for graphic design and creative marketing!
Ashley says that her education in the Department of Art & Art History gave her the technical skills to confidently step into the design field. “The graphic design program pushed me to think critically about visual communication and problem-solving, while also encouraging experimentation and creativity. I also had the chance to intern with Chartwells Higher Ed on campus, where I applied what I was learning in class to real marketing campaigns. That mix of coursework and hands-on work really helped me build a strong foundation for the kind of design I’m doing today.”
Ashley is now a graphic designer for CPI Security, where she has been involved in the company’s full website redesign. As part of the design and marketing team, Ashley worked alongside the creative director, writers, and UX designers to refresh the site from the ground up, from reorganizing content to building updated page layouts and visuals. “Collaborating with such a talented, fast-paced team helped me grow quickly and showed me how much impact good design can have when everyone is aligned. I’m really proud to have been a part of this project and to have seen the amazing transformation!”
Ashley also does freelance design work and recently partnered with the Department of Theatre at UNC Charlotte and Three Bone Theatre to design the logo for the Carolina New Works Play Festival.
“Take advantage of every opportunity to apply what you’re learning outside the classroom,” she advises current students, “whether it’s internships, freelance work, student organizations, or campus events. Those real-world projects helped me grow more than anything and gave me the confidence to step into professional roles. Also, don’t be afraid to share your work and ask for feedback! The more you put yourself out there, the more you’ll grow as both a creative and a collaborator.”
