How did you first get interested in art?
I first became interested in photography the day my parents gave me a bright purple Kodak point and shoot camera for the holidays when I was a young child. I was always taking photos of my friends, family, and my pets when I was growing up and asked for my first DSLR camera when I was around fourteen years old and began bringing my camera everywhere. I did my first film workshop at the Light Factory soon after and fell in love with the process of developing black and white images. I did a little bit of darkroom work in high school as well before deciding that I wanted to continue my studies in art in college.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I just hope to be able to do photography as a full time career after graduation- in any capacity! My true love is fine arts and specifically film photography but I’d be happy to work as a freelance photographer shooting portraits, events, or even commercials. I want to continue being creative with my work but as long as I have opportunities for that I’d be more than fulfilled.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Art & Art History?
My favorite thing about CoA+A, specifically the photography department, is how much of a community it is. Being a smaller program, there are incredible opportunities to work closely with your peers and professors and get personal feedback and insight. I’ve learned a lot and been really inspired by my classmates, and professors Aspen Hochhalter and Ann Kluttz have both changed the game for me and taught me so much.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
Outside of class and work, I am pretty involved in the Charlotte local music scene. I love going to shows here- and photographing them too!
