How did you first get interested in dance?
I first became interested in dance when I was 10 years old, after being exposed to famous dancers on social media and TV. I was immediately inspired and wanted to be a dancer as well! For the first few months, I would dance in my living room, stretch, and try to teach myself different steps all on my own. My mom noticed my self-teaching and put me in dance classes at a studio. From there on out, I was a competitive dancer until I graduated high school!
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I hope to either have a career in commercial dance, or be a part of a contemporary dance company. Either one would be a dream!
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Dance?
My favorite thing about the UNC Charlotte Dance Department is the beautiful community and positive environment it provides the students! The second that I joined the dance department I felt so incredibly welcomed with open arms and made friends that I know will stay in my life long after I graduate. The faculty come from so many different walks of life and are each so knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. I’ve grown so close with my fellow dancers in the department as well as the faculty, we are truly like a little family. 🙂
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I am a part of a dance crew/commercial dance training program called Lynchburg Dance Connection (LDC), which was originally started by Alisha Dixon in Lynchburg, Virginia and has branched out to create a community here in Charlotte!Â
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not in class or studying, I love to read, thrift, go to concerts, hang out with friends, and play with my dog Bella!
