Even as a student, Jason Losko was making large sculptural works, and the year he graduated from UNC Charlotte, his steel and stained-glass A Sapling’s Canopy received the “People’s Choice Award” in the Polk Museum of Art’s Outdoor Sculpture Competition in Lakeland, Florida.

Jason had worked in construction and fabrication before enrolling at UNC Charlotte. Professor Winston Tite (now retired) taught him every semester and helped direct those skills.

“From the early years in 3D Design to the later years when I was producing large outdoor sculptures, Winston was supportive of my work and my personal exploration,” Jason told Associate Professor of Art History Jim Frakes in an interview.

It was while in graduate school at the Pratt Institute that Jason began his career in metalsmithing, later founding his own studio with John Salvato. Metalform Studio, situated in Brooklyn Navy Yard, has an A-list of clients, including the Museum of Modern Art and MOMA PS1, the Perrotin Gallery, Selldorf Architects, Deborah Burke Architects, and Manhattan’s High Line.

“One can imagine, surveying the company website, that its impeccable staircases, balconies, fences and gates, floor grates, doors and window-frames, to say nothing of its showpiece artworks, are the envy of everyone who sees them,” Frakes has written.

For the Generations exhibition in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Department of Art & Art History, Jason contributed a new, exquisite work: “The Forces Within (2024),” made of aluminum, steel, stainless steel, aircraft cable, and glass.
