Amy Windham El-Khouri has been the choral director at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, VA, since the school opened in 2002. Amy teaches students at all levels, including two audition women’s choirs, an audition mixed chamber choir, a concert choir, and a show choir and was recognized as a “Top Teacher” by the Henrico Citizen. The Deep Run music department has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Music by the Virginia Music Educators Association each school year since 2006. She was also able to serve as the treasurer for the Virginia Choral Directors Association and had an ensemble perform at the Virginia Music Educators state conference in 2023.

Amy looks back fondly on her years at UNC Charlotte. “The program was large enough to offer me all the experience and classes I needed, but it was wonderful to be a part of a program that was small enough where I felt like a person and not a number, where everyone knew everyone and supported each other.”

Shortly after graduating from UNC Charlotte Amy was hired to teach vocal music at Pocahontas Middle School. Three years later, Amy became the choral director at Deep Run High School. This year (2016), she was named Henrico County Public School’s Music Teacher of the Year.

During her education at UNC Charlotte, she “honed skills to help make something I loved my career. I had a wonderful student teaching experience and professors who helped me tailor my studies to my future career. University Honors helped hone my critical thinking skills and helped me narrow my career path to a comprehensive high school program.”

Amy and her husband Maron, also a UNC Charlotte music alum, live outside of Richmond with their daughters Emma and Madelyn. Amy is the recipient of the Department of Music 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award.
