Bachelor of Arts in Architecture

Storrs Building on Main CampusThe Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A. in Arch.) is the pre-professional, four-year undergraduate degree program in architecture. In the first three years, students are enrolled in general education and core architecture courses, including architectural design studio in the first year. In design studios and seminars, which occur each semester, students acquire the fundamentals of visual and spatial design, problem solving, conceptualization, technology, and environmental influences. In the fourth year, students select design studios and seminars related to topical interests such as energy and sustainability, digital design methods, urban design, and conceptual themes. In addition, students extend their knowledge of architectural history and technology while having the opportunity to pursue individual interests through architectural elective seminars as well as a final semester in Rome (see: /academics/school-of-architecture/international-study/rome-semester-program). The B.A. in Arch. is awarded at the end of the fourth year.

In the fall semester of the fourth year, students may elect to pursue a professional degree in architecture by enrolling in pre-professional coursework and by applying to the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.).

The SoA offers automatic recommendation for admission to the M.Arch. program to students who meet specific performance requirements within the B.A. in Arch. degree program. To earn the automatic recommendation for admission to the Professional degree program, students must complete the B.A. in Arch. with all Pre-Professional degree requirements and exceed the following GPA requirements:

  • Master of Architecture: Architecture/Major GPA of 3.25 or higher; and Overall GPA of 3.0 and higher*

*UNC Charlotte students who meet the application crieteria automatic recommendation for admission to the Master of Architecture may receive Advanced Standing in the graduate program. Master of Architecture II students with Advanced Standing pursue a 12 month (summer, fall, spring) professional curriculum that leads to the accredited architectural degree. Students who do not receive automatic reccommendation to the M.Arch. program with Advanced Standing may apply to the full Master of Architecture curriculum.

Students seeking to supplement their architecture education may desire to add an undergraduate minor. Students who enter the University as freshman with advanced placement coursework are likely to have time in their schedule for a minor in such areas as Architectural History Theory and Criticism, Business, Dance, Film Studies, Foreign Languages, Urban Studies, and more.
