How did you first get interested in dance?
Dance has always been a part of my life, growing up, my mom and my family in general love to dance, so it was something that naturally surrounded me at home. It was a constant presence in a part of how I was raised. I always had a passion for Dance, but it wasn’t until I started training more seriously in high school that I realized I wanted to pursue it on a deeper level. That’s when I truly fell in love with the art form. Coming to college helped me solidify the passion even more confirmed for me that I don’t just love Dance—I wanted to pursue it professionally.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
The prayer I hope to have is in commercial Dance. I’m really interested in becoming a professional dancer and choreographer, especially in the commercial industry. One of my biggest goals is to choreograph artists and perform as a backup dancer—particularly for R&B artists. Chris Brown is one of the main artists I’m currently inspired by, and I would love to work with.
I also want to continue growing as a dancer by deepening my training and styles like contemporary modern and especially hip-hop. On top of performing, I hope to eventually teach Dance as well, once I’ve gained more experience in the commercial world
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Dance?
One of my favorite things about the UNC Charlotte dance department is the strong sense of community in the opportunities that it offers to grow as an individual. The professors in the environment truly encourage you to push your training while also giving you the space to explore your artistry. I love how much freedom we have to express ourselves— whether it’s through choreography, collaborating with peers, or learning different dance styles.
To me, the Dance department feels like a family. I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have helped build such a supportive and inspiring space to learn and grow in.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not in class, studying, or working, I love spending time in the dance studios— just for fun. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends, Keegan, Christian, and Amaree. Another thing I really love is attending sisterhood events with my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta— it’s always a great way to connect and unwind. Outside of that I’m a big fan of shopping and trying out new food spots. I love exploring and experiencing new things whenever I can!
