How did you first get interested in art?
I’ve been passionate about drawing from a young age and did so constantly while growing up. Occasionally, I would experiment with air-dry clay, but my focus was primarily on illustration, which was my major when I first started at UNC Charlotte. However, after taking my first ceramics wheel class—a challenge so difficult I swore I’d never try it again—I found myself unable to step away. That experience ultimately led me to switch my focus to sculpture.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I plan to build a career as a sculptor, specializing in figurative sculptures and engaging with communities through outreach initiatives and educational workshops.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Art & Art History?
My favorite thing about the Art Department is the people I have been able to become friends with throughout the years. I have met wonderful people who have encouraged and helped me not only as an artist but also as a person. It is those who see their fellow artists as peers rather than competition that make a difference. The support from these people is what has kept me going.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I am the Vice President of the Cerama Club on campus where we hold making, glazing, and firing days where students from all majors are welcome to come and learn more about the ceramic process.
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
In my free time I enjoy reading, hiking, and spending time outdoors.
