How did you first get interested in art?
My first freedom through art expression came at a very young age: I drew on everything, including my mother when she needed time to write. My parents let me paint on my shoes and my bedroom walls – creating has always brought me solace. As a mixed raced girl and a member of the Chickasaw Nation, I use art as a form of acceptance in an environment where I often feel out of place. At the age of 14, I discovered my love for oil paints, which I have been using ever since. My paintings center on themes of female empowerment, self-reflection, and body positivity.
What kind of career do you hope to have?
I aspire to broaden my career as a freelance painter and to positively contribute to my community through my art.
What is your favorite thing about the Department of Art & Art History?
My favorite thing about UNC Charlotte’s Department of Art & Art History is the community of incredible professors and my friends. I love being surrounded by people who are just as passionate about the arts as I am.
Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
As a very active member of the Charlotte arts community, I was recently commissioned by Chief Graham in the State Emergency Operations to create a painted collage depicting Charlotte-Mecklenburg and including the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the Charlotte skyline, our fire department logo, and much more (pictured right). It is a tremendous honor to have my artwork displayed at the North Carolina Emergency Operations Center.
In 2024 I got to paint live at the opening of the Sue Lemmond Helms Community Art House and was also a part of pop up group exhibits at the McColl Center, “It’s Like Nude,” and Harvey B. Gantt Center, “Dark and Divine.” Starting spring semester ‘25, I will be interning at the McColl Center!
When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not painting at the easel or studying, I practice yoga, experiment with cooking, and travel!
