How did you first get interested in music?
I’ve always been interested in performing arts, the hard part was picking something specific. I did theatre, poetry, art, comedy; anything an overly enthusiastic middle schooler could partake in. I’m thankful I was given so many opportunities across the arts, and when it was time to choose a major, music made the most sense to me.

What kind of career do you hope to have?
While I went into it almost on a whim, I ended up falling in love with opera. After pursuing my masters, I’d just love the opportunity to perform nationally or abroad. I have had the distinct pleasure of witnessing so many talented performers in this department, and my only hope is that I can move an audience like they have moved me. My goal has always been to perform, so I will follow wherever opportunity leads me (and if it gets me to sing in Paris wearing insane tuxes in gorgeous venues, I certainly wouldn’t mind)

What is your favorite thing about the Department of Music?
It’s cheesy, but the people! The incredible teaching, opportunities, and resources I’ve been given have been a direct result of the remarkable people in this department. The music department is relatively small, but that just means that everyone gets a level of care and attention you wouldn’t see anywhere else.

Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I work for Opera Carolina’s Opera Xpress program. We have the incredible job of coming to elementary schools across Charlotte (and beyond) and performing opera. For most kids, this is their introduction to the genre, so it’s really gratifying to see them get excited about it. I’ve learned a lot (including how to drive a massive van full of bee-themed set pieces), and it’s been one of the highlights of my year.

When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
Since music was my hobby, it was hard to find something else that wasn’t just going out to dinner with friends. I’m really into fashion and color coordination, and when I’m not drowning in assignments I love going to the gym.
