Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking, UNC Charlotte (2002)

Retired printmaking professor Heather Hoover recalls Seth Avett as one of the most dedicated and talented printmakers she taught. Seth and his brother Scott, now part of the popular band The Avett Brothers, both studied art (Scott at East Carolina University).
The Avett Brothers’ first official album, Country Was, appeared in 2002, the year that Seth earned his BFA in printmaking, and the musicians frequently rehearsed in the lobby of Rowe Arts while Seth was a student. The band has since had eleven “top 200” Billboard hits, including three that reached the top ten, and has been nominated for Grammy awards three times. Swept Away, a musical featuring Avett Brothers’ songs, opens on Broadway in October 2024.
Seth still blends the visual and the musical, using his prints and drawings, as well as his layout and writing skills, to package and present The Avett Brothers albums.
Though he will be on tour during the Department of Art & Art History’s 60th anniversary show, Generations, he contributed a linocut created for his solo album Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown.
