Hannah Grissom

Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Irvine in the Department of Art History’s Visual Studies

Education: B.A. in Art History, Studio Art, and French, UNC Charlotte (2023)

After graduating from the UNC Charlotte in 2023 with Bachelor of Arts degrees with Honors in Art History, French, and Studio Art, Hannah Grissom accepted a fully-funded offer from the University of California, Irvine in the Department of Art History’s Visual Studies Ph.D. program for the fall of 2024.  She will be studying with the Dean of the School of Humanities and Professor of Art History Dr. Tyrus Miller.

Hannah’s plan is to extend and challenge the knowledge of visuality and its histories that she has gleaned from the faculty members and courses taken as an Art History major.  Her research interests lie within modern and contemporary art history, Marxism, and with the traces of transhistorical encounters (alternate constructions of time and history) that artworks produce.  Her graduate studies research will focus on the French philosopher and artist Guy Debord.

As a first-generation graduate student, Hannah expresses a warm note of appreciation to Dr. Jae Emerling, Professor of Art History, who served as her undergraduate honors thesis advisor. Hannah adds that “Dr. Emerling’s research guidance and his special approach to art history—his uncanny ability to share knowledge and ideas—have certainly prepared me for the rigorous and critical undertaking of graduate school.”
