Participation in the UNC Charlotte Orchestra is open to all students at UNC Charlotte.

The UNC Charlotte Orchestra  (MUPF 1110) represents the highest-level orchestral performance group at UNC Charlotte. The Orchestra presents music from across the spectrum of the symphonic repertoire, and emphasizes the art and science of group musical interaction. An audition is required for enrollment. As part of the Orchestra Mosaic project, the ensemble combines annually with student and faculty musicians from other educational institutions to create collaborative performances presented at various metropolitan concert venues. This strategy supports the performance of repertoire more than once and thus increases the learning potential of each student.

Spring 2023 Auditions: This year, the Ensemble Directors have implemented a woodwind and brass audition process for all performing students. If you take part in the woodwind and brass auditions during the first week of classes, you do not need to audition separately for the orchestra. Dr. Yamamoto will work with the studio instructors to determine which woodwind and brass students are to be assigned to the orchestra based on the requirements of the repertoire being programmed.

All new string players must audition for Dr. Yamamoto during one of the audition days and times listed below. Auditions for the orchestra take place in Rowe Recital Hall (Rowe 140). A link to a Google Sheet sign-up document is provided below for the 10-minute audition time slots on the dates and times posted. Please watch your email, or check the Ensembles/Orchestra page of the Music Department for more information:

  • Tuesday, January 10, 5:30p-6:30p
  • Wednesday, January 11, 5:30p-6:30p

Students should prepare at least one movement or part of a movement from the classical literature such as the exposition of a standard concerto, or solo sonata, a popular song, or church hymn. In addition, all students must play at least two major scales in two octaves, up and down, at the time of the audition.

*Please select a time slot for your audition with Dr. Yamamoto on this Google Sheet.*

Please contact the UNC Charlotte Orchestra Conductor, Dr. Alan Yamamoto via email at ayamamot@uncc.edu if you have questions about the auditions, or about the ensemble itself.
