The Department of Dance presents a Spring Dance Concert featuring student performers in works by faculty and guest choreographers.

Program

In the Dark- Choreographed by E.E. Balcos

  • This contemporary dance narrative is influenced by perspectives of American society in the 1950s and its parallel to current times.

a moment alone- Choreographed by Anna Edwards

Night Swimming- Choreographed by Jacqueline White

  • Night Swimming is an ode to the space between youth and adulthood, the risks we take, and the choices we make that divert our paths to the unexpected.

Mind vs. Matter- Choreographed by Ashley Tate

  • Mind vs. Matter is a multidisciplinary dance piece that explores the ebb and flow of mental toughness, resiliency, and self-confidence.

 

Guest Artists' Biographies

Anna Edwards is a Charlotte, NC based dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist. She earned her BA in Dance Performance, Choreography, and Theory from UNC Charlotte in 2018 and her MFA in Dance from Hollins University in 2019. Since then she has been an adjunct lecturer at Johnson C. Smith University, Winthrop University, Coker University, and UNC Charlotte. She also teaches at local dance studios and is the Co-Director of Belmont Dance Expressions. As a dancer and choreographer, Edwards seeks to empower voices, emphasize community, and tell stories through rigor and play.


Jacqueline White began her ballet training with Arnott Mader of the Richmond Ballet and continues to train and learn 30+ years later with teachers and institutions, including; Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Finis Jhung, ABT and Bill T. Jones. Jacqueline has performed with numerous regional companies including; Martha Connerton/Kinetic Works, Kim Robards Dance Company, (Denver, CO), Echo Contemporary Dance Arts, and as a founding member of Movement Migration. Her choreography has been performed at Ballet Fest Atlanta, the North Carolina Dance Festival, NC State University, and in the Charlotte Dance Festival. She has taught in public schools, private studios, and directs Open Door Studios in Charlotte. Jacqueline White is an ABT® Certified Teacher, who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through Level 6,7, and Partnering of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. When she is not at the studio, she is busy with her other job, “Mother” to two children, a dog and two cats.
